William Rowswell (1694 - 1738)

St. Michael's Church, Shepton Beauchamp

William Rowswell was born on May 19, 1694 in Shepton Beauchamp, Somerset.

He was the child of Henry Rowsell (1658-1720) and Dorothy England (1665 - ), both of Shepton Beauchamp.

William married Sarah (unmarried name, unknown). They had only the one child of which we are aware:

Richard Rowsell (1720 - 1772).

William passed away on August 22, 1738, in Shepton Beauchamp. It is not know where or when he was joined by Sarah.

Henry Rowswell was born on January 7, 1687 in Shepton Beauchamp, Somerset.

He was the son of Henry Rowswell (1658-1720) and Dorothy England (1665 - ), both of Shepton Beauchamp.

Henry married Mary Stevens (1697-1768), also of Shepton Beauchamp. They had 8 children, all in Shepton Beauchamp:

Henry Rowswell was born on April 7, 1658, in Shepton Beauchamp, Somerset.

He was the son of Henry Rowswell (1603 - ) and Margerie Gould (1639 - ), both of Shepton Beauchamp.

Henry married Dorothy England (1665-), also of Shepton Beauchamp. They had 5 children:

Henry Rowswell was born on January 19, 1603 in Shepton Beauchamp, Somerset.

He was a child of Edward Rowswell (1573-1649) and Jane Manning, both of Shepton Beauchamp.

He married Margerie Gould, born April 7, 1639 in Shepton Beauchamp. The marriage is recorded in the Somerset Registers of Marriages as March 3, 1656, at Curry Rivel. She was the daughter of Gulirham William  Gould (Jan 4, 1606 - ) and Phillipa Gould (1612 - ), of Devon. 

Henry and Margerie had 3 children, all in Shepton Beauchamp:

Henry Rowswell (1658-1719)
Mary Rowswell (Aug 13 1660 - Sep 11 1660)

We do not presently have a record of the deaths of either Henry or Margerie.

John Rowswell (1608 - 1674)

St. Michael's Church, Shepton Beauchamp

John Rowswell was born in 1608 in Shepton Beauchamp, Somerset.

He was a child of Edward Rowswell (1573-1649) and Jane Manning (1573-1609), both of Shepton Beauchamp.

John married Christabel Davy (1605-1671). The marriage is recorded in the Somerset Registers of Marriage, on November 24, 1630. Together, they had at least 2 children:

John Rowswell (June, 1635 - ) He subsequently Joan (maiden name, unknown).

Christabel died in Shepton Beauchamp in 1671. John (the elder) followed her 3 years later, in 1674.

Edward Rowswell (1573 - 1649)

Edward Rowswell was born October 2, 1573 in Shepton Beauchamp, Somerset.

He was one of 5 children of Patrick Rowswell (1535-1609) and Edith (maiden name, unknown) (1548-1614), all of whom were born in Shepton Beauchamp.

Edward married Jane Manning (1573-1609) of Shepton Beauchamp. They had 3 sons, all in Shepton Beauchamp:

Edward Rowswell (1608-)

Jane died in 1609, in Shepton Beauchamp.


Edward subsequently remarried, to Dorothy (maiden name, unknown). The records suggest she was quite young when she had her first child with Edward, but was able to bear him 8 children before she died in May, 1625. All the children were born in Shepton Beauchamp:

Patrick Rowsell was born in 1535, in Shepton Beauchamp, Somerset.

He was a child of Isabella Rowswell (1510 - 1591) and an unidentified father (presumably a Rowswell).

He married Edith (unmarried name, unknown) who was born on May 3 1548 in Shepton Beauchamp. Together, they had 5 children, all in Shepton Beauchamp:

Peter Rowswell (1540 - 1603)

Peter Rowswell was born in Shepton Beauchamp, Somerset, in 1540.

He was born to Isabella Rowswell (1510 - 1591) and an unidentified father (presumably a Rowswell).

He married Johanna Best, presumably in Shepton Beauchamp. Together, they had 5 children, all in Shepton Beauchamp:

Christopher Rowswell (1538 - 1588)

Christopher Rowswell was born in 1538 in Shepton Beauchamp, Somerset.

He was one for four sons born to Isabella Rowswell and an unidentified father (presumably a Rowswell).

He married Johanna England (1538 - 1595), presumably in Shepton Beauchamp.

Christopher and Johanna had at least two children, both in Shepton Beauchamp, although only their son survived:

It is understood that Christopher died in Shepton Beauchamp in 1588. Johanna died 7 years later, in 1595.

Isabella Rowswell (1510-1591)


St Michael's Church, Shepton Beauchamp

We understand that Isabella was born in 1510 in Shepton Beauchamp, Somerset, in the South Petherton hundred. Her unmarried name, and the identity of her parents, are unknown.

The identity of her husband (presumably a Rowswell) is also unknown.

She and her husband had at least 4 sons, all born in Shepton Beauchamp:

Christopher Rowswell (1538 - 1588)
Peter Rowswell (1540 - 1603)
Patrick Rowswell (1535 - 1609)

An entry of death places her death or burial at September 1, 1591 in Shepton Beauchamp.

Isabella is presently the earliest direct ancestor of this Rowsell family.
