John Aaron Rowsell (1789 - 1831)

St. Pancras Church, West Bagborough

John Aaron Rowsell was born December, 1798 in Staplegrove, Somerset.

He was the only child of Aaron Rowsell (1766-1852) and Betty Hill (1773-1790), of West Monkton.

John married Mary White (1783-1861) of Oake, Somerset on November 1, 1815 at St. Michael and All Angel's Church in Taunton. She was the daughter of John White (1734-1820) and Ann Winter (1740-1801).

John and Mary had 4 children, all in West Bagborough, Somerset:

John Aaron Rowsell (Sep 1816-1861)
Thomas J. Rowsell (Dec 1819-Dec 1892)
Elizabeth Rowsell (Apr 1823- Oct 1831)
Martha Rowsell (Jan 1829- June 1831)

John passed away in August 1831 at Cheddon Fitzpaine, Somerset. Mary lived for another 30 years, passing away in Taunton in October 1861.

Aaron Rowsell (1766 - 1852)

St. Augustine's Church, West Monkton

Aaron Rowsell was born in 1766 in West Monkton, Somerset.

He was a son of Richard Rowsell (1720-1772) and Elizabeth Cure (1729-1770), of West Monkton.

Richard married Betty Hill (Feb 1773 - Dec 1790) of Cheddon Fitzpaine in 1789. She was the daughter of John Hill (1729-1809) and Sarah Collick (1747-1806). They had one child, born later that year, John Aaron Rowsell (Dec 1789-Aug 1831).

Betty died shortly after John was born. Aaron Rowsell died in January, 1852 in Taunton, Somerset.

Joel Rowsell (1764 - 1844)

St. Augustine's Church, West Monkton

Joel Rowsell was born in March, 1764 in West Monkton, Somerset.

He was the son of Richard Rowsell (1720-1772) and Elizabeth Cure (1729-1770) of West Monkton.

Joel married Amy Taunton (1764-1841), of Edmonton, Middlesex, on June 27, 1784 at Edmonton All Saints Church.

Joel and Amy had 9 children, all in Enfield:

Joseph Rowsell (June 1786- )
Sarah Rowsell (July 1788- )
William Rowsell (Nov 17 1790 - )
Charles Rowsell (Nov 1794 - )
Elizabeth Rowsell (May 1797 - )
Peter Rowsell (1799-1880)
Mary Ann Rowsell (1801 - )
James Rowsell (Feb 1804 - )
Richard Rowsell (Nov 1805 - )

Joel is believed to have passed away October 18, 1844. Amy pre-deceased him, having died prior to 1841.

John Rowsell (1748 - 1775)

St. Michael's Church, Creech St. Michael

John Rowsell was born in West Monkton, Somerset, in 1748.

He was the son of Richard Rowsell (1720-1772) and Elizabeth Cure (1729-1770), also of West Monkton.

John married Hannah Hurcott (1750 - ) at St. Michael's Church in Creech St. Michael, Somerset on December 3, 1771.

They had 2 daughters, at Smokey Farm, Staplegrove:

Sarah Rowsell (Sep 1772 - Nov 1856)
Betty Rowsell (Oct 1774 - Feb 1780)

John is believed to have passed away at Smokey Farm, Staplegrove in May of 1775. Hannah appears to have subsequently remarried, to William Harris (1750 - ), later that year. She passed away 5 years later, in 1775, in Biddesham, Somerset.

Daughter Sarah subsequently married Robert Hill in 1791, at Creech St. Michael, with whom she had 2 children: John Hill (Dec 1795 - ) and Elizabeth Hill (Feb 1799 - ). Both were born at at Smokey Farm, Staplegrove.  The deaths of both Sarah and Betty are subsequently recorded at Taunton, St. James parish.

James Rowsell (1751 - 1796)

St. Augustine's Church, West Monkton

James Rowsell was born in August, 1751 in West Monkton, Somerset.

He was a child of Richard Rowsell (1720-1772) and Elizabeth Cure (1729-1770).

James was apparently a butcher. He was married to Mary Kidner (1751- ), also of West Monkton. They had 4 children:

John Rowsell (1771-1813)
Mary Rowsell (1777- )
James Rowsell (July 1780- )
Sarah Rowsell (1782- )

In 1783, Mary (nee Kidner) was under investigation locally for having employed a 13 year-old pauper girl from Devon, named Mary Challis. It is unclear from the record why Mary Challis was in West Monkton or how the investigation was concluded, and more importantly whether this Mary Challis was either deported back to Devon or found some way to stay in James' home. What we do know, however, is that James' household in West Monkton included this young woman, Mary Challis, for at least some period of time, and that Mary would have been essentially the same age as James' first son, John, who was by then a young man.

James died in West Monkton, in 1796. We do not currently know how long Mary lived, or where she died.

Richard Rowsell (1720 - 1772)

St. Augustine's Church, West Monkton

Richard Rowsell was born in 1720, in Shepton Beauchamp, Somerset.

He was the only child of William Rowswell (1720-1772) and Sarah (unmarried name, unknown) (1704 - )

He married Elizabeth ("Betty") Cure (1729-1770) on December 28, 1745, at the Church of St. Augustine in West Monkton, Somerset. She was 16 at the time, having just pass her last birthday in March. Richard was 25. She was originally from Barnstaple in Devon, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Cure.

Richard and Betty had 8 children, all in West Monkton:

John Rowsell (1748 - May 1775)
James Rowsell (August 1751 - March 1796)
Mary Agnes Rowsell (Jan 1754 - )
Sarah Rowsell (July 1756 - )
Richard Rowsell (Feb 1759 - )
Amos Rowsell (Dec 1761 - 1793)
Joel Rowsell (Mar 1764 - Oct 18 1844)
Aaron Rowsell (1766 - Mar 14 1852)

(It seems to have been in West Monkton that the surname was changed from "Rowswell" to "Rowsell". Perhaps in the hands of a new community, where the Rowswell name was less common than it was in Shepton Beauchamp, it was simply transcribed differently in the Parish records. Or perhaps Richard deliberately changed the name for a particular reason. If anyone runs into Richard, please ask him, for me, won't you?)

Richard died in Staplegrove, Somerset, in 1772. Elizabeth pre-deceased Richard by 2 years, having passed away in 1770. Perhaps Richard was staying with one of his children in Staplegrove, in his declining years.

Henry Rowswell (1658 - 1719)

St. Michael's Church, Shepton Beauchamp

Henry Rowswell was born on April 7, 1658, in Shepton Beauchamp, Somerset.

He was the son of Henry Rowswell (1603 - ) and Margerie Gould (1639 - ), both of Shepton Beauchamp.

Henry married Dorothy England (1665-), also of Shepton Beauchamp. They had 5 children:

Henry Rowswell (Jan 7 1687-1756)
John Rowswell (Oct 8 1689 - )
Edward Rowswell (Jan 1 1691 - Aug 12 1717)
William Rowswell (May 19 1694 - Aug 22 1738)
Elizabeth Rowswell (Aug 9 1697 - )

Henry died on November 18, 1719 in Shepton Beauchamp. Given their age disparity, it seems likely that he pre-deceased Dorothy by several years.

The above information was taken from undocumented secondary online sources, and has not been verified with reliable, primary documentation.

Stanley and Ada had three children.

Stanley died in February 1994, in Kings Lynn, Norfolk. Ada had already passed away, on December 6, 1967, in Essex.

Elizabeth Rowsell (1827 - 1901)

St. George's Church, Wilton, Somerset
Elizabeth Rowsell was baptized in the Church of St. George in Wilton, Somerset on December 25, 1827. She was the sixth and last child of John Rowsell (1792 - 1854) and Maria (nee Moor).

Elizabeth had 5 siblings:

Isabella Rowsell (1816 - 1829)
Elizabeth Rowsell (1818 - 1820)
Mary Anne Rowsell (1820 - )
James Rowsell (1822 - 1900)
Jane Rowsell (1824 - )

Elizabeth subsequently married Francis Forward, carpenter, at St. George's church on January 17, 1844. His father is listed as Thomas Forward. (The IGI lists this event as occurring at Wincanton, Somerset.)

The IGI records a Francis Forward, son of Francis Forward, being born in Somerset in 1856. This may have been a son of Francis and Elizabeth. The 1881 Census records Francis Forward (25) as head of a household in Willow Bed Farm, Cucklington, Somerset, with his wife Caroline (38), and children Austin (4) and Sidney (6 months).  Francis is listed as a "farm carter".

Interestingly, the 1881 Census records three other families of Forwards in Willow Bed, Cucklington, Somerset:

Elizabeth Forward (widow) (52), born in Kingston Magna, Dorset; Washerwoman and head of the house.
Thomas Forward (son) (22), born in Hersington, Somerset. Farm labourer.
John Forward (son) (17), born in Broomfield, Somerset. Farm carter.
Edwin Forward (son) (15), born in North Petherton, Somerset. Farm labourer.
William Forward (son) (12), born in Cucklington, Somerset. Farm labourer. (!)
Walter Forward (son) (10), born in Cucklington, Somerset. Farm scholar.

Henry Forward (widower) (56), born in Cucklington, Somerset. Gameskeeper, and head of the house.
Sophia Nickolls (daughter) (40), born in Mere, Wiltshire. Butler's wife.
Charles Nickolls (grandson) (3), born in North Kensington, Middlesex.
Jane Nickolls (granddaughter) (2), born in Alton, Hampshire.

James Forward (71)(?), born in Cucklington, Somerset. Farm labourer and head of the house.
Sarah Forward (wife) (49), born in Modbury, Devon.
William Forward (son) (12), born in Cucklington, Somerset. Farm labourer.
Henry Forward (son) (10), born in Cucklington, Somerset. Scholar.

Farm in Cucklington (undated photo)

It is tempting to believe that these Forward families had lived and worked at this farm for several generations, and that Francis took his bride Elizabeth back to that farm after their marriage, to live with his family. The 1841 and 1851 Censuses show several Forward families at Willow Bed farm, and elsewhere in Cucklington, throughout this period. However, there are some discrepancies on ages and birthplaces, so these families may ultimately prove to be unrelated.

Jane Rowsell (1824 - )

St. George's Church, Wilton, Somerset
Jane Rowsell was baptized in the Church of St. George in Wilton, Somerset on October 24, 1824. She was the fifth child and fourth daughter of John Rowsell (1792 - 1854) and Maria (nee Moor).

Jane Anne had 5 siblings:

Isabella Rowsell (1816 - 1829)
Elizabeth Rowsell (1818 - 1820)
Mary Anne Rowsell (1820 - )
James Rowsell (1822 - 1900)
Elizabeth Rowsell (1827 - )

Jane subsequently married Charles Reed, carpenter, at St. George's church on March 16, 1841. His father is listed as James Parsons. (The IGI lists this event as occurring at Wincanton, Somerset.)

Jane and Charles subsequently also baptized a son, Henry James Reed, at St. George's on August 29, 1841. Given the timing of this baptism, we can probably assume that Jane was at least in the early stages of pregnancy during their wedding(!) Charles Reed is recorded as the father of several more children baptized in the Wilton area in subsequent years, including Frank Reed (baptized in Wilton on June 6, 1858).

1851 Census, Taunton
The 1851 Census shows Charles (33) journeyman carpenter and Jane (33) living at 110 South Street in Taunton with their children Henry (10), Sarah Jane (6), Isabella (3), and Frederick Charles (1). As with the 1861 Census, there is no mention of Thomas, who appears (at age 24) in the 1881 Census, and would have been 6 years old by this time.

1861 Census, Taunton
The 1861 Census records Charles Reed (42) Carpenter and Jane (42) living at 27 Turkey Court - Joy Cottage, Taunton, with their children Henry James (19) carpenter, Sarah (16) tailoress, Frederick Reed (11), Arthur (8) and Frank (6). (Isabella is not mentioned in this Census, but as she does show up in 1881 we can assume that she was just staying elsewhere at the time, perhaps with family.)

The 1881Census also records Charles Reed with children Isabella Salome Reed (27) and Thomas Gabriel Reed (24). However, as Jane seems to have disappeared from these entries, it is not clear that these are all the same family. Alternatively, Jane may have died and Charles may have subsequently remarried. This story requires further research.

No local record of Jane's burial has yet been located.

Mary Anne Rowsell (1820 - )

St. George's Church, Wilton, Somerset
Mary Anne Rowsell was baptized in the Church of St. George in Wilton, Somerset on September 17, 1820. She was the third daughter of John Rowsell (1792 - 1854) and Maria (nee Moor).

Mary Anne had 5 siblings.

Mary Anne subsequently married Henry Parsons, coal miner, at St. George's church on March 19, 1844. His father is listed as George Parsons.

1851 Census, Taunton
By the time of the 1851 Census, their family appears at 52 Coal Orchard in St. James Parish of Taunton. Henry (31) Cordwainer and Mary Ann (30) Milliner, have added Edwin John (15), Ellen (3), John (2) and George (4 mos) to their family.

No death or burial records of Henry Parsons or Mary Ann have yet been identified.

Elizabeth Rowsell (1818 - 1820)

St. George's Church, Wilton, Somerset
Elizabeth Rowsell was baptized in the Church of St. George in Wilton, Somerset on September 6, 1818. She was the daughter, and second child, of John Rowsell (1792 - 1854) and Maria (nee Moor).

Elizabeth had 5 siblings.

No record has been located of Elizabeth subsequently being married, or having children, suggesting that she may have died at an early age. Further, John and Maria named a subsequent child Elizabeth. St. Mary Magdalene records a burial on July 19, 1820, of 2 year-old Elizabeth "Rowsall".  If that infant was our Elizabeth, then we know that poor Maria would have been heavily pregnant with Mary Anne at the time of baby Eizabeth's passing. Isabella would have been 4 years old then, as well, providing some comfort to the grieving family.

Isabella Rowsell (1816 - 1829)

St. George's Church, Wilton, Somerset
Isabella Rowsell was baptized in the Church of St. George in Wilton, Somerset on August 18, 1816. She was the daughter, and first child, of John Rowsell (1792 - 1854) and Maria (nee Moor).

Isabella had 5 siblings:

Elizabeth Rowsell (1818 - ) (who may have died young)
Mary Anne Rowsell (1820 - )
James Rowsell (1822 - 1900)
Jane Rowsell (1824 - )
Elizabeth Rowsell (1827 - )

No record has been located of Isabella subsequently being married, or having children. St. Mary Magdalene does record the burial of an "Eliza Bella" Rowsell of Shuttern Rd., age 13, on May 24, 1829.

Rowsells in Taunton Area 1700s

Taunton-area Hundreds in Somerset
There were several Rowsell families in the Taunton area in the 1700s. It seems likely that John came from one of them. Below is an incomplete record of some of those families.

In a roughly chronological order:

The parish registers at Taunton, St. Mary Magdalene record that a John Rowsell was married to Sarah Mico on July 21, 1700. This may be the same John and Sarah who subsequently baptized 4 children there: Avis, on March 22, 1709; James, on April 25, 1712; Sarah, on May 29, 1714 and William, on June 19, 1723. John's occupation is recorded as a "hellier", and they lived on North St., then Fore St., in Taunton.

The parish registers at Taunton, St. Mary Magdalene record that a John Rowsell of Brosely, Shropshire, married Elizabeth Pengelly of Taunton on April 4, 1701.

The parish registers at Taunton, St. Mary Magdalene record that a Mary Rowsell of Stoke, St. Gregory married John Norris on May 19, 1714.

At Taunton St. James, Mary Rowsell married William Stachel on June 2, 1718.

At Taunton, St. James, Thomas Rowsell of Bishop's Hull married Mary Low, on July 9, 1718.

The parish registers at Taunton, St. Mary Magdalene record that a Thomas Rowsell, carpenter, of Bishop's Hull married Amy Pavier of High Street, Taunton, on June 19, 1721. This may be the same Thomas Rowsell and Amy who had a son, Thomas, baptized there on June 2, 1723; a daughter Mary, on January 31, 1724 (who, it seems, died in infancy); a daughter Betty, on April 10, 1726, and another daughter, Mary, baptised on October 13, 1728. At the time of Thomas' birth, they lived on High Street.

The parish registers at Taunton, St. Mary Magdalene record that a Richard Rowsell of Stoke, St. Gregory married Sarah (of) Brownsford, North Curry on June 6, 1722.

The parish registers at Taunton, St. Mary Magdalene record that Elizabeth Rowsell and Benjamin Pavier, a carpenter, married on November 4, 1723. (It is tempting to see an extended family connection here with the Mary Pavier who married Thomas Rowsell two years earlier.)

At Wilton, St. George, Briggett Russell married Richard Upham on September 28, 1725.

George Rowsel, a hellier, and Elizabeth had a son, George, baptized at St. Mary Magdalene August 2, 1724; and another son, John, baptised on June 26, 1730. This may be the same John Rowsell who married Betty Mays at Taunton St. James on April 24, 1757.

At Wilton, St. George, Thomas Rowsell, a "white baker", married Sarah Perriam on July 31, 1726. This may be the same Thomas and Sarah who had a daughter, Elizabeth, baptized at St. Mary Magdalene on August 23, 1727; a son, Thomas, baptised on July 28, 1729; and, a daughter, Sarah, baptised on August 24, 1730. They lived on East Street at the time of Elizabeth's birth.

Anne Rowsell of Trull married John Baker at Taunton St. James on April 8, 1728.

Susanna Rowsel married Christopher Lyte at Taunton, St. Mary Magdalene on January 11, 1730.

John Rowsell married Sarah Pool at Taunton, St. Mary Magdalene on November 5, 1730.

Thomas Rowsel and Mary (nee German) had a daughter, Mary, baptised at St. Mary Magdalene on May 7, 1731.

Thomas Rowsell married Elizabeth Nation at Taunton St. Mary on September 16, 1734. This may be the same Thomas and Elizabeth who had 4 children baptised at St. Mary Magdalene: Elizabeth, on August 25, 1735; Mary, on July 4, 1737; John, on September 10, 1739; and Thomas, on June 3, 1741. This may be the same John Rowsell who married Betty Mays at Taunton St. James on April 24, 1757. This may be the same Elizabeth Rowsell who married William Dare on December 16, 1765 at St. Mary Magdalene.

John Rowsell married Mary Robbins on January 31, 1734 in Shepton Beauchamp.
The parish registers at Taunton, St. Mary Magdalene record that Robert Rowsel married Ann Bond on May 3, 1736.

At Wilton, St. George, Henry Rowsell married Elizabeth Cade on January 17, 1741.

John Rowsell married Mary Salisbury in Shepton Beauchamp, on April 14, 1743. Are they the parents of the Henry Rowswell who married Ann Robinson at Shepton Beauchamp on August 21, 1779, and William Salisbury Rowswell who married Elizabeth Ann Stephens on January 6, 1784 also in Shepton Beauchamp?
In Bishop's Hull (the parish neighbouring Taunton St. Mary) Shusannah Rowsell married John Wyatt on October 30, 1744.

Also in Bishop's Hull, Bridget Rowsell married James Pyper on September 5, 1745.

On November 2, 1746, John Rowsil was baptized in Crewkerne. Thomas Rowsil is the only recorded family.
John Rousewell married Mary Manning in Shepton Beauchamp on November 28, 1747.

Molly Rowsell married Richard Peddle at Taunton, St. Peter on November 30, 1751.

James Rowsell and Catherine had two sons baptized at Taunton, St. Mary Magdalene: John, on March 31, 1751; and William, on 1753. In terms of birthdate and geographic proximity, this John Rowsell is a strong candidate for John Rowsell, my direct ancestor. Is this the same William Rowsell who married Betty Bowden, of Dayton, on January 5, 1778, at Swell?

Ann Rowsell married George Dunman at Taunton, St. Mary on December 1, 1752.

Hannah Rowsell would have been born in 1752. She was buried at age 67 by Taunton, St. James on March 31, 1819. She had been in the "poor house".

John Rowsell would have been born in 1752. He was buried at Stoke, St. Gregory on August 24, 1834 at age 82.

John Roswell married Mary Vewer in Portbury on July 5, 1754.

John Rowsell married Betty Mays at Taunton, St. James on April 24, 1757.

Betty Rowsell married John Kirt at Staplegrove on June 7, 1757.

The parish registers at Taunton, St. Mary Magdalene record that a Thomas Rowsell of Staplegrove married a Joan Kew on November 5, 1757.

John Rowsell would have been born in 1758. He was buried at Stoke, St. Gregory on July 1, 1835 at the age of 77.
The IGI tells us John Rosewell died on June 22, 1759. His next of kin was William Rosewell, of Somerset. Later in Crewkerne, a John Rowsell, son of William Rowsell, was baptized on January 5, 1763. Later, on April 7, 1765 at St. Bartholomew's in Crewkerne, another John Rowsell was baptized, son of another William Rowsell. And again in 1768 in North Petherton, a John Rowsell, son of William Rowsell, was baptized. Again at St. Bartholomew's, another John Rowsell, son of William Rowsell, was baptized on March 14, 1773. Are these different Williams? Was this William's second or third John, the first one(s) having perhaps died in infancy? Or are duplicate entries just erroneously transcribed?
At Wilton, St. George, Thomas Rowsell married Elizabeth Ackland on July 5, 1762. This may be the same Thomas and Elizabeth who later had two daughters baptized at St. Mary Magdalene: Mary, on June 7, 1764; and Sarah, on April 30, 1766. This may be the same Thomas and Elizabeth who were listed in the parish register as witnesses to a marriage at Wilton St. George between William Neville and Fanny Pile (poor girl) on September 30, 1771. Could this be the same Sarah Rowsell who married James Stark at Taunton St. James on October 4, 1784?

On October 15, 1764, Thomas Rowsell married Martha Duder, according to Ashill Marriages.

According to the IGI, John Rowsell married Betty Gollop at Buckland St. Mary on November 27, 1765.

The register at Wilton St. George records that a Mary Rowsell was buried on February 17, 1765; a Sarah Rowsell was buried on November 13, 1766; and a Thomas Rowsell was buried on May 27, 1773. No age was given for any of these deceased, so we could only speculate if any of them are the same persons as any of the above.

Several John Rowsell's were born in the late 1740s, early 1750s. One of them may be the John Rowsell who married Betty French in Merriot on August 30, 1768; or, perhaps the John Rowsell who married Sarah Tolman in Shepton Beauchamp on November 6, 1770, and who subsequently baptized their son, John Rowsell, in Shepton Beauchamp on March 28, 1773. In terms of birthdate and geographic proximity, this John Rowsell would also be a strong candidate for John Rowsell, my direct ancestor (except that he would be a little young).

Thomas Rowsel married Sarah Hawkins on April 4, 1771 at Taunton, St. Mary Magdalene.

The Staplegrove Marriage Index tells us that a James Rowsell married Jane Pool on January 6, 1772.
At Buckland St. Mary, James Rosewell (a baker) married Susannah Dimond on February 18, 1773. Also at Buckland St. Mary, Susannah Rosewell married Robert Pyne on October 25, 1773. Then a Peter Rosewell married Mary Board at Buckland St. Mary on January 19, 1778. James, Susannah and Peter would seem to be from the same family.

Sarah Rowsell married Robert Solomon on November 5, 1773 at Taunton St. James.

Elizabeth Rowsell married George Woolcott of West Monkton there on May 7, 1775, and John Rowsell married Miriam Woodland there on September 11, 1775.

John Rowsell married Hannah Gannett at Taunton St. James on September 23, 1776.

At Taunton St. James, John Rowsell married Mary (Sarah?) Lee, on May 3, 1779. One of their sons was John Lee Rowsell, who married Mary Ann Pring on June 10, 1810. They apparently had 5 sons and 4 daughters, including the following, who were baptized at Taunton St. James: James Henry, on January 6, 1813; Alfred, on December 18, 1816; Henry, on October 21, 1818; Mary Jane, on January 17, 1882; Ellen, on November 28, 1822(?); Rosina, on April 21, 1824; Austin, on July 20, 1826; and Eliza Lee, born June 5, 1811 and baptized January 7, 1812. All lived in Obridge.
